G'day, I'm Matt.

Welder, then rocket engineer, then all in on AI. I write RareConnections, and I build AI agents every day.

I started as a welder.
Started life as an apprentice stainless steel and aluminium fabricator, welding on super yachts.
Long days, hot steel, and a healthy respect for people who work with their hands for a living.
That's me. Safety was not our strong point, but we lived.

Then, I built rockets.
I studied Mechanical Engineering, then went to work as a propulsion engineer at a startup building an orbital launch vehicle.
I was responsible for the design, build and testing of the vehicle’s 400 kilowatt electric hydrogen peroxide pump.
Blowing stuff up is a huge part of building rockets. It teaches you to test everything before you trust it. I still work that way, and it’s how I review AI tools.
I'm in there somewhere. We blew this rocket up too.

I quit a six figure job because of ChatGPT.
Late 2022, ChatGPT dropped and I could see exactly what was coming. I sold my shares in the rocket company, quit, and started building things on the internet full time.
Most people said that was dumb. Four years later, here we are.

This blog was my first win.
RareConnections is where I made my first dollar online. I grew it from nothing to about 500 visitors a day in a few months, purely by understanding how Google ranks pages.
These days I build AI agents every single day, and I still come back here to write down which tools are actually worth your time and money.
